CONSAIL CHARTER SAILING

THE BAY 28 miles long – 12 miles wide – from Point Judith to Sakonnet River Passage north to Providence then east to Mount Hope Bay and Fall River, Narragansett Bay is Rhode Island’s stellar natural attraction. There is evidence that the Vikings first discovered The Bay in 1000ad (Native Americans knew it was here all the time). The famous Italian explorer Verranzano landed here in 1524 and named Rhode Island ( there’s a story here ). The State’s founder, Roger Williams, settled here in 1636 and named The Bay’s central islands Patience, Prudence, Hope and Despair. There are many who say that the American Revolution started here – not Boston. The British ship Liberty was burned in 1769 and the British ship Gaspee attacked in 1772 by Rhode Island patriots here – all before the Boston Tea Party. And, there’s the rich maritime heritage of Newport where for many years the America’s Cup was defended, won and lost.
